Methane is one of greenhouse gas that is mostly generated from burning of fossil fuels, industrial and domestic waste. Furthermore, the population growth in Malaysia has increase the energy demand and it is expected to increase by 4.7% every year. More electricity will be generated to meet the demand of population growth and contribute to more GHG emissions especially methane gas. This is because, Malaysia still highly depend on fossil fuel-based electricity generation compared to renewable energy. The methane gas is harmful and can pollute school indoor environment that can cause respiratory problems for students in the schools. To identify and overcome this problem, a Smart Solar Powered Methane Detector were built using Arduino Technology to detect methane gas leakage in schools especially inside classrooms in Malaysia. The automated system was developed in this research to alert the students through buzzer sounds once the methane gas is detected inside the classroom. The whole system will be powered by battery bank that is being charged using Solar Panel. Thus, the identification of materials and cost to build this innovative prototype together with the coding was presented in the methodology section. This prototype can be useful for students and teachers in schools where regular pollution is expected and meet United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being.
